Our best friend

"What a Friend we have in Jesus,
all our sins and griefs to bear!
                                 What a privilege to carry,,,

                                  everything to God in prayer!
O what peace we often forfeit, O what needless pain we bear,
All because we do not carry everything to God in prayer.

                                    Have we trials and temptations?

                                        Is there trouble anywhere?
                                   We should never be discouraged;

take it to the Lord in prayer.
Can we find a friend so faithful who will all our sorrows share?
Jesus knows our every weakness; take it to the Lord in prayer.

Are we weak and heavy laden,

cumbered with a load of care?
                                      Precious Savior, still our refuge,

take it to the Lord in prayer.
Do your friends despise, forsake you? Take it to the Lord in prayer!
In His arms He'll take and shield you; you will find a solace there".
What an amazing song? I learned this song when i was 8 years old from my Sunday school. But i was singing this song since then, without knowing the meaning of the song or without trying to findout the meaning.Sometimes in life it takes us a while to recognise certain truths . And god had to teach me a lesson in life to realise the meaning of this song. When my wordly best friend betrayed me..that was the only painful day in my life which i could not stand. My trust for 18 years was lost. But  it helped meto know that Jesus is your only Best friend .A friend who gave his life for you...A friend who never changes, A friend who never betrays or leaves you, A friend who always have time for you, to help you, care you and encourage you.He knows you better than anyone else in the world. He knows your thoughts. He loves you the way you are  and he is with you always.Even if your mother and father leaves you,he will not leave you..HE is our best friend.Jesus said” "Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends".(John 15:13)..After that when i sing this song, it gives me such an annointing feeeling that could not be explained, but only felt!. I would like to share the story behind the creation of this beautiful song.Joseph M. Scriven is the writer of this song. The day before his wedding his fiance died in a tragic accident. Heartbroken, Joseph went  from his homeland and started a life in Canada. While in Canada , he fell in love again and became engaged to Eliza Roche. Once again, his hopes and dreams were shattered when Eliza became ill and died before the wedding could take place.
Inspite of all the pains, his faith in God sustained him. Soon after Eliza's death Joseph  began preaching for a Baptist church. He never married but spent his life to spread the love and compassion of Jesus wherever he went.Jesus was with him as his best friend.Around the same time that Eliza died, Joseph received word from Ireland that his mother was ill. He could not go to be with her, so he wrote a letter of comfort and enclosed one of his poems entitled What a Friend We Have in Jesus. Many years later, when joseph was ill, a friend visited him. During this visit, his friend was very impressed when he ran across his poems, including What a Friend We Have in Jesus. As a result of this visit, almost 30 years after his letter of comfort to his mother, Joseph's poems were published in a book . Soon thereafter, noted musician Charles C. Converse  put music to one of those poems: What a Friend We Have in Jesus. And  that’s the story behind this beautiful song!
